Labor Day is a holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September. Labor Day is a celebration of the labor movement in the United States and gives the tribute to the workers who fought for their social and economic rights.
Labor Day was promoted by the Knights of Labor and Central Labor Union who organized first parade on the streets of New York. In 1887. President Grover Cleveland established Labor Day as official national holiday, to be held on the first Monday in September.
This holiday is celebrated in the form of the street parade to show to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”1. After parade there is a festival for the workers and their families. Later, in 1909. American Federation of Labor adopted Sunday preceding Labor Day as Labor Sunday.
Labor Day is probably the largest sale date after Black Friday, and it has become one of the most important sale weekends in the year for many retailers in the US.
This holiday also marks return to school. At this time best back to school deals and discount you can find at Sears, and Kmart.
Labor Day is also beginning of the NFL and college football season, it is also between first and second week of the US Open Tennis Championship in New York.
However, this year retailers advertised Labor Day very aggressively, trying to clear their stocks and prepare themselves for fall holidays. Many retailers have discounts even bigger than for Christmas and it is expected sale to be big. Biggest sales are expected in apparel (Labor Day clearance at Bluefly – up to 60% off), electronics (Dell and MacMall have Labor Day deals on laptops), home improvement (Overstock – up to 45% off at Labor day) and accessories (at Macy’s you can save 25-65% on handbags).
